2011 International Year of the Volunteer
Volunteers are an essential component of the creative and leisure industries workforce and yet remain largely unrecognised in current funded training initiatives. New workplace health and safety regulations being introduced in January 2012 and the commencement this month of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 will impact on many organisations in the sector that rely heavily on the services of volunteers.
SkillsHub has put out a guide to the key changes that is available for download in the lead up to the release of a National Volunteer Strategy that aims to:
- engage new volunteers;
- respond to emergencies and build community resilience in the face of challenges;
- address protection, risk management and training issues for volunteers;
- respond to emerging trends and issues; and
- recognise, support and value volunteers.

Industry Events:
MAD – Multimedia Art and Design Network Conference, Hepburn Springs August 4 & 5th
SkillsHub was again in attendance at the annual MAD conference. The event is a highlight on our calendar and provides ample opportunity for industry updates and discussion around the implementation of vocational education and training for the creative and design industries. Industry speakers at this year’s conference included:
Hannah Bertram, an artist that exhibits internationally and works in the most ephemeral of mediums – dust
Melissa Voderberg one half of a design duo, Studio Latitude that specialise in reinventing Australiana and giving contemporary design status to the humble souvenir
Carmel Bird, a writer of fiction and editor. Carmel assisted the audience produce short works of fiction using random triggers. The exercise highlighted the imagination and skill behind each work of fiction.
The MAD network is keen to commence planning for the implementation of the two new cultural industries training packages in the visual arts and dance, CUV11 and CUA11. All providers reported an increase in placements since the introduction of recent skills reforms and demand for the creative and design industries is likely to reman high under a market driven system. Providers spoke of the need to continually improve on the quality of training delivery and keep links to industry strong to ensure ongoing success.
SkillsHub provided an update of recent activities with special mention of the Game Plan project that seeks to place students into traineeships in the games and digital interactive media industries
2011 Adventure and Nature Based Tourism Forum – Geelong 4 & 5th August
SkillsHub attended the VTIC (Victorian Tourism Industry Council) Adventure and Nature Based Tourism Forum in Geelong. The forum focussed on changes to the operating environment for adventure nature based tourism operators and gave them the tools to adapt. The forum was attended by industry, local government and state government bodies who joined together to hear from a host of speakers.
Overall the forum provided an interesting update on the adventure tourism sector which closely aligns to the outdoor recreation industry. The Forum provided businesses with some handy tools on customer relations, marketing and business compliance. To read more about the forum and keep and eye on what they will do next year, visit the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) website.
